Damit lassen sich bis zu vier Festplatten in einem nur 150(H) x 102(W) x 216(D) mm großen Gehäuse unterbringen, die als RAID 0/1/5/6/5+HS oder JBOD zusammengeschlossen werden können. Angetrieben wird das System von einem Intel Atom mit 1,6 GHz Geschwindigkeit und 1 GB DDRII Arbeitsspeicher. Dazu kommen zwei Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet-Anschlüsse, drei USB 2.0- und zwei eSATA-Schnittstellen zur Erweiterung.

Ansonsten muss sich der SS-439 nicht vor seinen großen 3,5-Zoll-Kollegen verstecken. Die Liste der Funktionen lädt zum scrollen ein: AES 256-Bit volumenbasierte Verschlüsselung, iSCSI Target Device, File sharing, FTP, Backup-Software, WebServer, UPnP- und iTunes-Unterstützung, BitTorrent-Client und und und. Da sich das System von der Größe her auch gerne auf dem Schreibtisch platzieren lässt, sind die Angaben zum 7 cm großen Lüfter an der Rückseite interessant. Im laufenden Betrieb gibt Qnap die Lautstärke mit 34,5 dB an. Im Stand-By sind es mit 33,6 dB etwas weniger. Der Stromverbrauch des Systems liegt im Normalbetrieb bei ca. 18W. 800 US-Dollar verlangt Qnap für das SS-439 Pro Turbo NAS.
